Ants are the pest most often treated wrong because the species matters more than the treatment. Killing a trail is satisfying and completely pointless. The colony replaces it in days.
What we treat, and where.
- Species identification first — ghost, white-footed, big-headed, carpenter, pharaoh and acrobat all behave differently
- Non-repellent products and baits carried back to the colony
- Interior trails, wall voids, and the exterior source they are coming from
- Landscaping, mulch beds, tree limbs touching the roof and irrigation-damp soil
- Perimeter treatment on the rotation to stop re-entry
- A defined trail along a counter edge, baseboard or window frame
- Fine sandy soil pushed up through a crack in a patio or driveway
- Ants appearing after rain, when colonies get flooded out and move indoors
- Sudden appearance in a bathroom or kitchen with no obvious food source
Why the wrong spray makes it worse
Repellent sprays on the wrong species cause budding: the colony splits and you go from one problem to four. Ghost ants and pharaoh ants in particular respond to a hardware-store spray by spreading through a building. This is the pest where identification changes the entire approach, and it is worth the five minutes it takes to get right.

Why do they keep coming back after I spray?
Because you are killing foragers, not the colony. The queen keeps producing. Baits and non-repellents get carried back and deal with the source.
Are they coming from outside?
Usually, yes. Most of what we treat indoors is nesting outdoors and foraging in. That is why the exterior perimeter matters.
